Certified Child Life Specialists are educated and clinically trained in the developmental impact of illness and injury. Their role helps improve patient and family care, satisfaction, and overall experience.
Infants, children and youth confront a wide variety of stressful and potentially traumatic events that can impact their ability to cope. These experiences related to healthcare can lead to feelings of fear, confusion, loss of control and isolation that can inhibit their development and have negative effects on their physical and emotional health and well-being.
In both healthcare and community settings, Certified Child Life Specialists help infants, children, youth and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability, loss and bereavement. They provide evidence-based, developmentally and psychologically appropriate interventions including therapeutic play, preparation for procedures, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain.

I have over 18 years of experience working as a Child life specialist. My experiences range from working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Infant and Toddler Unit, and Hematology/Oncology clinic to my current position of 13 years, in pediatric and perinatal palliative care. I have also co-facilitated A Caring Place for several years which is a children's bereavement support group in Rochester, NY. Although I love all aspects of my profession, my heart is in providng end of life and bereavement support to children and their families. I also have my Masters degree in Special Education (Birth-2nd grade) and have experience working in Early Intervention and as a Four Plus teacher.
My goal is to provide quality Child life support that is specifically tailored to the needs of you and your child(ren). A parent consult will be scheduled to discuss your concerns and goals and we will work together to create a plan to best support you and your child(ren). All support is provided in the comfort and safety of your home or at a mutually agreed upon location in the community.
